My hat is off to Dr. Frost.  He did a photo shoot to promote Damon braces in his office and had someone video tape the process.  They then took that photo shoot video and posted it on YouTube!  So he essentially took a day of marketing expenses (photographer, lights, models, etc.) and turned it into another opportunity to promote his practice.

The video quality isn’t great, but it’s good enough and they had some fun with the editing.  My only comment would be to place his domain or contact information on the lower third of the video for those who don’t make it to the end.  And in case you didn’t know, most people don’t make it to the end, so don’t miss the opportunity to get your information in front of all viewers by only placing it at the end.  Check out the video below:

Start thinking about the activities you do in your office for marketing and promotion.  Do you deliver gifts to referring offices?  Do expos or school events?  Why not take a camera along with you and turn it into more than just one marketing opportunity.  Have fun with video and way to go Dr. Frost.

Have you ever done an interview on the radio, TV, internet, or even contributed to a local newspaper?  Dr. Daher has found a great way to take a radio interview and turn it into a video.

Now there are a few things I would recommend changing about this interview/video.  First, try breaking it up into smaller videos since we know the average person will only listen/watch for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds.  The second thing to change would be to add some visual interest to the video.  Change the photo every 30-45 seconds so the viewer has something to watch.  And finally, put the series of videos on your website (he has a great PR video on his site, just not this one)

All that having been said, are you starting to think of ways you can turn any of your marketing material into video?  Can you do an interview style question and answer segment?  The idea here is to get your orthodontic marketing ideas flowing and start taking advantage of the power of video on the web.

Streaming video to your website was a cool idea but has always been very expensive and so complex that you needed to have another company set it all up and run it for you. Well that has all changed today thanks to Amazon. If you are not familiar with streaming video vs progressive download, here is a little background.

Most video on the web is presented through what is called progressive download. That means that as the viewer watches the video, it continues to load. If it loads slower than it plays, the video stops to buffer and then continues when enough new video has downloaded.

When it comes to short videos, under 4 minutes this is typically the way to go. The files are generally small enough that they don’t cause much if any buffering (buffering is bad because research is showing that viewers leave your video when it buffers). It is also easy to set up, typically doesn’t add any new costs to your web hosting, and because your videos are not sensitive in nature you are not too worried about people having a copy of your video.

The other option is to use streaming video. This creates a situation where the viewer is only downloading that is on the screen and the rest is discarded. It also means that with a long video the view can move to any point along the timeline and start playing the video right there without waiting for the entire video to load. These are cool features and with longer videos means you are less likely to lose your viewers do to buffering and if they leave, they can come back and start the video where they left off.

The problem has always been high costs and extreme complexity. Basically it wasn’t worth it…until now. Amazon has added streaming to its CloudFront service. Amazon has been offering an inexpensive way to store files called S3 for years now. They then added CloudFront to make accessing those files for your viewers faster with CloudFront by delivering the videos through servers closest to the viewers geographic location.

Now, CloudFront is offering streaming for you video without ANY extra cost and they take care of the complexity. So if you would like to have your video streaming on your website, then Amazon S3 with CloudFront is the way to go. Check it out for yourself by Clicking Here.

I’ve been suggesting orthodontic and dental offices keep a Flip video camera in their office so they can catch testimonial videos, reaction videos, or anything fun going on in the office. Well I’ve recently heard about a new camera from Kodak, the Kodak Zi8, that is said to vastly better than the Flip camera and it has an external mic input jack.

That means improved video quality with great audio quality in a video camera the size of a blackberry. Check out this video review to see if you want to pick one up for your office or family.

Ok, I’ve had a few people question the validity of video marketing especially when there is competition in the market.  So I decided to run a specific test on my own blog to show just how well, and how fast an orthodontic or dental video marketing campaign can work.

I focused on just two main keywords to see if I could get onto page one of Google utilizing only my blog and video marketing.  The results are amazing so I put the proof into video so you could see for yourself.

I couldn’t resist posting this video. It comes from str8k94u on YouTube. He is an orthodontist who wanted to see what the VectorTAS orthodontic miniscrew felt like. So yes, he placed one on him self.

Personally I had a hard time watching the video because I swear I can feel the thing in my mouth as I watch. That being said, he’s had close to 7,000 views of this video and never capitalized on it. At the very least, he could have put his main website either in the video as a lower third display or somewhere on his YouTube channel. This is a fun (slightly disturbing for me) video that could have been and still can be used as a video marketing tool.
